Pune: the student city, in numbers
Savitribai Phule Pune University alone affiliates roughly 700 colleges, and the city holds somewhere above 600,000 students once you count Symbiosis, MIT WPU, Bharati Vidyapeeth, FLAME and the private universities on the outskirts. More than half of them come from outside Maharashtra, which is why Pune has the biggest hostel and PG economy in the country and why so many national student brands test here before Mumbai.
Pune Gen Z is split cleanly in two. The 18 to 22 year olds are on campus and on FC Road. The 22 to 26 year olds have moved to Hinjewadi, Baner, Kharadi and Magarpatta for a first IT job and spend on bikes, gyms, breweries and weekend trips to Lonavala.
Where to find them
The Deccan belt is the heart: Fergusson, BMCC, SP College and Modern on or near FC Road, with JM Road, Goodluck Chowk and Vaishali as the daily hangouts. COEP sits by the river at Shivajinagar. Kothrud has MIT WPU, Cummins and a dense PG population. Viman Nagar is Symbiosis territory with Phoenix Marketcity as its mall. PICT, VIT and the Sinhgad colleges are spread across the southern suburbs, while Hinjewadi and Lavale hold the Symbiosis campuses that feel like small towns of their own.
Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar are the weekend. Baner and Balewadi High Street are where the first-jobbers eat. Pune also has a real Marathi theatre and music culture through the Firodiya and Purushottam Karandak competitions, which means college societies here are unusually strong and unusually good at producing content.
Our Pune playbook
- Campus and hostel: activations at Fergusson, COEP, Symbiosis, MIT WPU and PICT, plus hostel-level sampling in Kothrud and Viman Nagar. See campus marketing and sampling and activations.
- Fest season: MindSpark, Zest, Symbhav, Sympulse and Credenz, with the Karandak drama circuit for brands that want culture credibility.
- Creators: Marathi and Hinglish student creators who shoot on FC Road and in Koregaon Park, not in a studio. See creator and UGC.
- Communities: WhatsApp groups built around hostels, placement cells and the Hinjewadi commute. See community marketing.
- Apps: install and signup programmes for fintech, mobility and edtech brands where the hostel crowd converts first. See app user acquisition.
Timing matters in Pune. The academic year starts in late June and July, fest season runs from December to March, and the Hinjewadi first-jobber crowd is most reachable in the appraisal months of April and May, when the campuses are quiet but the offices are not.
Why brands choose us for Pune
Two of our longest-running two-wheeler programmes, for Bajaj Pulsar and KTM, were built around Pune’s campus and first-jobber crowd, and the team behind GenZ Marketing has also run Pune work for Unacademy, Pee Safe and Lenskart. We know the difference between a college on the Deccan side and a private university at Lavale, and we plan permissions, timing and creators for each separately.
Pune and Mumbai are a pair: same creator pool, same fest calendar, three hours apart. Most Pune programmes extend there in wave two, with Ahmedabad or Indore as the next hop west and north. If you are shortlisting a Gen Z marketing agency for a student launch, our Gen Z marketing guide sets out how campus, creators and community fit together.
