Lucknow’s Gen Z: scale without a metro price tag
Uttar Pradesh has more 18 to 26 year olds than any other state, and Lucknow is where the ambitious ones end up. The city holds around 200 colleges and somewhere above 250,000 students, with the University of Lucknow and its affiliated colleges, KGMU, BBAU, Integral and Amity as the big intakes and IIM, IIIT, SGPGI and the National Law University at the top. Around that sits a coaching population preparing for UPSC, state PCS, banking and SSC exams that is larger than most cities’ entire student bodies.
Lucknow Gen Z consumes in Hindi. YouTube, short video, OTT and music are overwhelmingly Hindi-first here, and the city’s creators have followings across the whole Hindi belt. English-led creative does not fail here so much as get ignored.
Where Lucknow’s 18 to 26 year olds are
The University of Lucknow is on University Road near Hasanganj, with Christ Church, IT College and National PG College nearby and Hazratganj as the shared hangout. KGMU and SGPGI anchor the medical crowd in Chowk and Raebareli Road. Gomti Nagar is the new city: Phoenix Palassio, the Riverfront, 1090 Crossing, Amity and the Jaipuria institutes, plus the first-jobbers from the HCL IT City campus. Aliganj and Kapoorthala hold the UPSC coaching belt and its hostels. Integral is on Kursi Road; IIM Lucknow is out at Prabandh Nagar; BBAU and the law university are on Raebareli Road.
Evenings mean Hazratganj, 1090 Crossing or the Riverfront, and the city has a strong cafe culture for a Tier 2 market. Lucknow Super Giants season turns Ekana Stadium into the biggest youth gathering of the year.
